The first tabletop shoot I did in a booked studio was for a boutique watch brand in Clerkenwell. I turned up with a 100mm macro, a focus rail, a couple of speedlights and the expectation that the room would just... work. It did not. The table was 70cm off the floor. The nearest mains socket was 4 metres behind me. The bounce wall the owner had mentioned turned out to be a conference wall with a door in the middle of it. I shot 60% of what I needed and went back the next week to a different room.

Tabletop work has its own set of requirements that are almost entirely absent from standard studio listings. This post is what I wish someone had told me before I started booking dedicated rooms for small product.

Why a tabletop studio is a different animal

A white cyc is built for people. The floor is curved, the ceiling is high, the lighting points are rigged for full-body work. None of that helps when you're trying to isolate a ring against a soft gradient, or get a catchlight off a watch crystal that doesn't include the reflection of your own forehead.

A proper tabletop studio has, roughly:

A sturdy shooting table (ideally 80–100cm wide, 120–180cm long, 75–90cm high) with clip points along the edges.
A white plexi surface or a removable black acrylic top for reflections.
Blackout curtains or a separate dark room so you can kill ambient completely when you need to.
A mains ring with sockets ACTUALLY on the shooting side of the table, not across the room.
At least 3 boom arms or overhead rigging points — a macro shoot has more light modifiers than you'd think.

Rooms that have all of this tend to call themselves 'tabletop studios' explicitly. Rooms that say 'suitable for product' usually have a table, a white wall and not much else. Both have a place. Both are priced very differently.

What I pay for tabletop rooms in London

Rough ranges from my last 12 months of bookings, all in London, all with reputable operators:

Basic product room, table and sweep only, 20–30 sqm: £180–£280 per day
Mid-tier tabletop, with rigging and modifier hire included: £320–£480 per day
Specialist jewellery/watch room, blackout, polariser filters in-house, macro rail: £450–£700 per day

Half-day rates tend to be 60–70% of the day rate at the specialist rooms, because they know you'll pack up and leave quickly once you're done. At the basic rooms, half-day is often a hard 50% because they'll sell the second half to somebody else.

Outside London — I've shot tabletop in Bristol, Manchester and Birmingham in the last year — you can roughly take 25–35% off those numbers.

Gear the room should have (and usually charges extra for)

Some of this you'll bring. Some you'll want to hire from the room because they're a pain to transport.

A shooting table with clamps. Non-negotiable. Trying to clamp a diffuser to a conference desk means the diffuser wobbles every time the air handling cycles.
Boom stands, minimum 2. You'll want at least one overhead and one to shape the side. Cheap boom stands will drop your light into the product if they're not properly counterweighted. Ask.
Small strobe or continuous head. A Profoto B10 Plus (500Ws) is massive overkill for most tabletop work — I often shoot at 1/32 power on it. A Godox AD200 or an older D1 500 at 1/64 is often a better match. For continuous, I bring an Aputure MC or a pair of Amaran 200d IIs.
Small softboxes, 30–60cm. Bigger isn't better on a 3cm-wide watch. A 60cm octa on a boom is a sweet spot for most jewellery work.
Black and white flags, 30x40cm. I carry my own. The room will have some, but they're usually bent or grubby.
A focus rail. Either you bring your Novoflex, or the room hires you a Cognisys rail at about £35 per day — worth it if you're focus stacking anything.

The lighting shift that surprises people

Small product wants SMALLER lights than you'd use on a person, relative to the subject. The rule of thumb is the light should be 2–10x the size of the subject to look 'soft' from its point of view. For a 3cm watch, a 30cm softbox at close range is a soft light source. For a 40cm handbag, you want a 60–80cm box. Nobody's shooting a watch against a 150cm octa.

This means the studio's standard-issue lighting kit (usually big modifiers for people) often isn't what you want. Either the studio has dedicated small-product modifiers, or you bring your own — and the difference shows in the final shot.

Cosmetics: a small flag

Cosmetics shoots split into two very different jobs. One is on-white catalogue work — foundations, lipsticks, bottles against a clean white. Two is hero imagery with texture — the cream is dolloped, the lipstick is melted, there's glitter everywhere. These need very different rooms.

For catalogue work, any decent tabletop room with a white plexi and a sweep will do the job. £250 a day, three crew max.

For hero/texture work, you want a room that's prepared to get a bit messy — PVC-lined floor, proper drainage (if you're doing anything wet), and the understanding that cleanup is part of the deal. Some studios charge a £50–£120 cleaning fee on top for this kind of work. A few won't take food or liquid work at all. Ask before you book.

Watch shoots: the reflection problem

Watches are probably the hardest small product to shoot, and the room matters more here than anywhere else.

A polished case and a glass crystal will reflect anything in the 180-degree hemisphere above the subject. That includes:

You.
Your camera.
The ceiling.
The light source, unless it's shaped.
Any coloured surface within 3 metres.

Which is why real watch studios have:

A blacked-out area above the table so only what you explicitly light shows in the reflection.
Side walls you can kill to pure black at will.
A 'shooting tent' or translucent cage so you can put the reflection of a clean white hemisphere in the crystal.

A generic product room with white walls will haunt your watch shoot. Every reflection of the room will be in every crystal. You can kill this in retouching, but it's hours of work per product. Better to book the room that was built for it.

Jewellery: the focus-stacking thing

A ring at f/11 on a 100mm macro has about 3mm of depth of field. If the ring is 15mm deep, you need to stack — five, ten, sometimes twenty frames depending on how clean you want the result.

Which means you need:

A rock-solid tripod on a surface that doesn't transmit footfalls from the room next door.
A focus rail, motorised or manual.
Stable lighting — strobe is fine if the room's power is clean, but flickery continuous will ruin the stack.
Tethered capture into Capture One or Helicon Remote.

Good tabletop studios know this and will have anti-vibration pads under their shooting tables, solid tripods you can borrow, and tethering set up on arrival. The difference between a 45-minute successful stack and a two-hour retry on a wobbly desk is real.

Time planning

Tabletop is slower than people shooting. Rough rule: plan for 6–10 finished hero shots per day per photographer. Catalogue pace is more like 30–60 product placements per day on a well-set-up line.

If the client's brief says '40 hero products in a day' and you've got one room, one shooter, one stylist, push back. Either split it across two days, or negotiate what 'hero' actually means (because it isn't 40 focus-stacked jewellery shots in 8 hours — nobody's doing that).

The in-house kit question

Tabletop rooms tend to have better-curated kit than generalist studios. A dedicated small-product room will often have: polariser sheets, black flocked card, velvet black backgrounds, linear polariser filters sized for 77mm and 82mm fronts, small clamps and magic arms in bulk, boom stands built for lightweight payloads.

Hiring all this gear separately from Calumet or Fixation can easily run £200 for the day. A tabletop room that bundles the essentials in the day rate is often cheaper than a cheaper room plus a kit hire. Do the maths both ways.

Tethering and client viewing

Small product shoots usually have the brand or art director on site. Tabletop shoots more than most — because clients want to see the hero frames on a big screen and sign off shot by shot, and because retouching assumptions matter when you're buying £800 of retouching time per product.

Which means you need:

A tethered setup running to a calibrated monitor. I use Capture One tethered over USB-C to a 27-inch BenQ PD2700U — middle of the road colour accuracy, cheap enough that I own one.
Either a separate client viewing room (some proper tabletop studios have these) or enough space around the shooting area to seat 2–3 people comfortably without them casting reflections into your setup.
Decent Wi-Fi or an ethernet run if the client wants to export reference frames to a phone or tablet as you go.

Not every room has this thought through. I once did a jewellery pitch at a room that had a single 13A ring across the whole floor plate, which meant plugging my strobe AND my computer AND the client's laptop into the same socket via a daisy-chain. Every pop tripped something. You want clean power for tether days.

Props storage and turnaround

If you're shooting 40 watches across two days, you're not rebuilding the set between each. You're keeping the lighting up, the table dressed, and swapping product in and out. This means:

A secure overnight storage option for products you can't take home (some watch brands insure to £200k per product — the brand won't accept you taking them back to your flat).
A separate prep table for cleaning, polishing and handing off products.
Lint-free cloths, cotton gloves, a dust blower and a micro-fibre stash. Some studios supply these, most don't.

Ask about overnight storage before booking a multi-day tabletop. A studio that has a lockable safe or a CCTV-monitored locked room will tell you straight. One that says 'we'll leave it in the office' is not a studio you trust with £50k of product.

Booking the right room

If you're not sure whether a room is set up for small product, ask for three things: photos of the shooting table in use, a current kit list, and the last tabletop job they hosted. Operators who take small-product work seriously will have all three ready. Operators who just want the day rate will have none of them.
