Shooting vertical video in a studio built for horizontal photography is more of a constraint than most people expect before they try it. The standard landscape assumptions — wide shooting distance, horizontal compositional logic, horizontal lighting rigs — don't just transfer when you rotate the frame. Some of them actively work against you.

I've done enough TikTok and Reels production in hired studios to have opinions on this. Here's what I check before I book a space for vertical content.

The format basics

TikTok and Instagram Reels both optimise for 1080 × 1920 pixels at a 9:16 aspect ratio — that's vertical full-screen on a modern smartphone. Both platforms support 30fps and 60fps; most content shoots at 30fps. Both accept MP4 and MOV. So far, standard.

But here's what the spec sheet doesn't tell you: Instagram's Reels interface overlays UI elements at the top and bottom of the frame. The safe zone for critical content — faces, text, key visual elements — is roughly the centre 1,010 × 1,440 pixels of the 1,080 × 1,920 frame. Anything outside that safe zone risks being partially obscured by the caption area, the like/share buttons, or the creator's username overlay. That narrow active window changes how you frame a shot and therefore how you position your subject in the studio.

Ceiling height matters more for vertical than horizontal

This is counterintuitive but real. For horizontal photography you're usually concerned with how far you can back the camera from the subject — how wide the shooting space is. For full-length vertical video, the ceiling-to-floor framing becomes your primary compositional space. You're filling a tall frame, not a wide one.

A studio with a 3-metre ceiling looks like it has room until you try to shoot a standing subject full-length in 9:16. At that ceiling height, even with an 85mm equivalent field of view on a crop-sensor camera, you're tight. Drop a softbox or an Aputure 600d on a boom above the subject and you're eating into the headroom. Add a Scrim Jim as a large diffusion panel overhead and you've potentially run out of vertical shooting room before the composition is resolved.

For vertical video, the practical minimum ceiling height I'd want is 4 metres. Five metres or more gives you genuinely comfortable working room for overhead lighting without hitting the ceiling with your rig and without cropping the subject uncomfortably to fit the frame. Ask specifically — not "is there good headroom" but "what is the exact ceiling height from finished floor to the underside of the lowest structure?"

Backdrop width vs backdrop height

Standard 9-foot paper seamless (2.74m wide) is designed for horizontal photography where you need width behind the subject. For vertical video you need height, and you need your backdrop to run tall enough that it doesn't show a seam or the wall above the paper at the top of the 9:16 frame.

Most studios run their seamless from a ceiling-height bar down to the floor, which gives you adequate height for most vertical work — assuming the ceiling is high enough. But check that the seamless is hung from the actual ceiling (or close to it) rather than from a crossbar at 3 metres. A paper seamless that starts at 3 metres and runs to the floor gives you 3 metres of usable vertical backdrop. That's enough for seated or crouching subjects; it's tight for full-length standing at anything below a very compressed angle.

Some studios mount seamless rolls on adjustable ceiling tracks — better. The best setup for vertical video is a seamless roll at maximum ceiling height on a motorised or manually adjustable track, so you can pull the right amount of paper for the shot without having to pre-position everything before the subject steps in.

Lighting for 9:16

Horizontal photography rigs — key light camera-left, fill camera-right, hair light from above-behind — transfer with modification to vertical work, but the geometry shifts. A standard key-light position that works well in 4:3 or 3:2 horizontal often creates a light-fall problem in the 9:16 frame because the edge of the frame is now at the top and bottom rather than the sides, and your lighting is positioned relative to a horizontal composition that no longer exists.

For beauty and portrait vertical video specifically, I've found that a larger, closer source works better than a smaller source at the "correct" distance for horizontal. A 1.2m Octabox at 1 metre from the subject, positioned high and slightly camera-side, produces a quality of light that reads beautifully in vertical — it wraps more of the face and doesn't produce the hard lateral shadows that can look dramatic in a widescreen frame but just look harsh on a phone screen.

Godox AD600 and Aputure 600d heads with large softboxes are the usual tools. Both have enough power for a full modifier at reasonable working distances. Profoto B10s are fine for close-up beauty work where you don't need massive output. Ask the studio what's available — for vertical content work, the number and quality of modifiers available often matters more than the raw power of the heads.

Shooting distance and room depth

For vertical video you typically need less lateral shooting distance than for horizontal photography, but you still need room depth — enough space between the camera and subject for the lens to work properly without excessive distortion. A wide-angle lens in a tight room can make the subject look awkward in a 9:16 frame; a longer lens at a proper working distance produces more flattering compression.

A minimum of 5 metres from camera to subject gives you enough working distance to use a 50mm–85mm equivalent lens without the awkward barrel distortion you get from pressing a wide angle close to a face. Studios that advertise themselves as "compact" or "boutique" often mean 4 metres of total depth from backdrop to opposite wall — that's workable but tight. Ask before you book.

The colour story on vertical

One thing that gets missed: colour contrast matters more in 9:16 than in landscape formats. The phone screen is small even at full-frame. Muted, low-contrast colour palettes that look sophisticated on a large monitor can feel flat and hard-to-read on a 6-inch phone display — which is where most of your audience watches.

This affects backdrop choice and set styling more than it affects the studio itself, but it's worth knowing that if your studio's white cove is slightly off-white from use, or your coloured paper roll is past its best, it's going to show more unforgivingly in vertical content than it would in a hero landscape shot for a print campaign.

Practical checklist for vertical video studio bookings

Ceiling height: 4m minimum, 5m preferred
Seamless paper hung from maximum height, not from a mid-room crossbar
Enough room depth for a 50mm+ working distance (5m minimum camera-to-subject)
Softbox and modifier inventory, not just raw heads
Power supply adequate for multiple heads (ask whether there are two or more independent circuits)
A monitor or tablet on set to review 9:16 crops rather than reviewing in landscape — don't trust your eye in horizontal

Can I just shoot horizontal and crop

Yes, and sometimes that's the right call — particularly for productions that need horizontal and vertical cuts from the same day. But shooting to a 9:16 crop from a horizontal frame gives you less than a third of your horizontal pixels to work with after cropping, and you lose the compositional thinking that makes vertical video actually good. The subjects are centred, the framing is incidental rather than intentional, and it usually shows.

If vertical content is the primary deliverable, design the shoot for 9:16 from the start. That means a studio chosen for it rather than adapted to it.
