Wedding photography in a studio is a different brief. Not dramatically different — but enough to matter when you're standing in a viewing, trying to work out whether the space does what you need it to.

Most studio hire guides pitch to commercial, product or fashion work. Wedding photography sits slightly to the side of all three. The client isn't a brand. The timeline is tighter and more emotionally loaded than a catalogue shoot. And the range of shots you need — from wide full-length two-shots on a clean background to macro ring detail work — spans what most studio spaces are built to support in a single room.

I've been doing studio-based wedding portrait sessions for about four years. Engagement shoots, formal bridal portraits, elopement packages where the studio session replaces the venue shoot entirely. Here's what I've learned about picking the right space.

Light comes before everything else

Hard, directional strobe light is usually wrong for wedding work. A Profoto B10 through a 60cm octabox at f/8 is fine for corporate headshots. It's not fine for bridal portraits, where skin texture is everything and the client's going to scrutinise every frame at close range for the next three decades.

What you want is large, soft, wrapping light. A big softbox — 90cm minimum, ideally 120cm or larger. Or a substantial natural-light source. North-facing daylight studios are excellent for this: the light is consistent, it doesn't shift colour temperature across the afternoon, and it wraps around faces naturally without the harsh shadow falloff a direct south-facing window gives you at 2pm.

So my first question for any studio I'm considering for wedding work: which way do the windows face? If they can't tell me, or the answer is 'mixed aspect', I dig deeper. A studio that looked beautiful in the listing photos — taken at 9am on a clear morning — can be a flat, uninspiring grey box by early afternoon. Been there. Rebooked elsewhere.

Floor area and room to move

A couple needs room to breathe. And I need room to back up.

For a full-length two-shot showing the whole dress — which clients almost always ask for — I need enough working distance to get a full-frame without distortion at whatever focal length I'm using. On a 50mm, that's roughly 3.5–4m of clear floor behind me. On an 85mm it's more. Add a backdrop stand and paper roll in front, add a couple of fill cards or a reflector on the sides, and you've eaten through a small studio surprisingly quickly.

I'd call 500 sq ft the practical minimum for wedding portrait work. Below that and you start making compromises: going wider than you'd want, cutting tighter to avoid the frame edges, limiting posing options. A studio cluttered with equipment you can't move is a studio that's going to slow your session at exactly the wrong moment.

Also worth thinking about posing flow. You're not shooting a static product. You're moving — adjusting, repositioning, getting low and shooting up. You need clear floor between setups, not a maze of C-stand legs to navigate while a client in a full wedding dress watches you.

What background options you actually need

A clean white wall or white cyc is a solid foundation. But most couples in a studio session — particularly elopement packages where these are the wedding photos, not a supplement to venue shots — want some variety across the session. Two or three different looks across the same space.

I look for studios that have at least one textured or coloured option alongside the standard white: a dark feature wall, a brick or plaster finish, a different floor surface. Or, failing that, room to set up my own seamless. A 2.72m wide roll of Savage white, grey or black fits on a standard backdrop crossbar between two stands — 2.72m is the standard wide roll size, the 107" equivalent — and transforms a plain white studio into something with a bit more range.

Some studios have built-in hanging rails for seamless rolls and a counterweight system to keep the paper taut. Others don't, and you're improvising. Fine, but factor in the setup time when you're booking the slot length.

The changing room spec — which most listings ignore

A bride in a full dress doesn't change in a studio toilet stall. She needs space, a full-length mirror, somewhere to hang the dress, and ideally room for a second person to help with buttons and bustle. This is the spec detail that almost no studio listing addresses. So I ask directly.

Is there a separate changing room or prep area? How big is it? Is there a full-length mirror? A garment rail or somewhere to hang the dress without it touching the floor? When was it last properly cleaned?

The answers tell you a lot about how the studio thinks about its clients. Spaces set up for beauty and fashion hire have usually considered this. Spaces set up primarily for product photography often haven't. And 'there's a bathroom you can use' is not the same answer as 'we have a dedicated changing room with a mirror.'

Power and practicalities

For a wedding portrait session I'm typically running two to three flash heads — a main light through a large softbox, a rim or kicker, sometimes a background light. A pair of B10 Plus units and an Aputure Nova P300c panel draws well within what a standard 13A ring main handles. But it's worth confirming there are enough sockets distributed around the room that you're not running extension cables across the floor between every setup change.

If you're shooting continuous light only — which suits some photographers doing wedding portraiture because the WYSIWYG modelling makes it easier to assess light before every shot — same point applies. You want at least two independent circuits if you're pushing multiple heads above 200W each.

Detail work: rings, shoes, flowers

Most photographers doing studio wedding sessions shoot detail work in the same space — rings, shoes, the invitation suite, a buttonhole. This needs a clean tabletop surface or a small seamless area with macro-capable lighting. It's easy to overlook in the viewing and annoying to improvise on the day.

Check that the studio has a surface at a workable height — a table or counter, not just the floor. And check that there's somewhere nearby to set down the flat-lay kit without it getting in the way of the main portrait setup. Small thing. But it shapes how the session flows.

What I actually pay

For a half-day (four hours), I'm typically in the £180–£350 range depending on city and spec. London skews higher — I paid £280 for four hours in a Dalston studio with decent north light and a proper changing room. Manchester and the Midlands run £150–£220 for equivalent quality.

Hourly rates in the right kind of space sit at £60–£120/hr in most UK cities outside London, and £90–£160/hr in London for something genuinely set up for this kind of portraiture work. The cheap end of that range usually means you're compromising somewhere — often on changing facilities or light quality.

For elopement packages where the studio is the whole event, not a supplement, I book a full day. The extra time takes the pressure off, the couple settles, and the images are better. A full-day rate of £400–£600 in the right space is reasonable. You'll also have room to shoot detail work properly without the clock making every decision.

Before you book: the seven questions worth asking

Which way do the windows face?
Floor area in square feet or metres?
Ceiling height?
Is there a backdrop hanging system, or do I bring my own stands?
Changing room spec: separate room, full-length mirror, garment rail?
How many power sockets and on how many circuits?
Parking — direct or nearby?

A studio manager who can answer all seven without hesitating has either shot in the space themselves or knows their clients' needs. Vague or uncertain answers on any of them are worth probing. Most good studios answer fine. And the ones that don't are telling you something useful.

Where to look

Daylight studios on creativestudiohire.com are a useful starting point — filter by city and look for specs that mention window light, changing rooms or portrait use. North-facing daylight rooms in Dalston and Hackney tend to suit wedding portrait work well. Manchester's Ancoats has a few options with excellent window light at rates that won't make your client wonder why their album cost what it did.

For elopement work especially — where the studio aesthetic is part of the image, not just the background — go on a viewing. At the same time of day you'll be shooting. Look at the light, the floor, the changing space. Forty minutes on a viewing saves you a disaster on someone's wedding day.
