Three years ago I spent around £3,800 putting together a home product photography setup. A decent Godox SK400II, a couple of softboxes, a rolling background paper stand, a Manfrotto tripod, and enough C-stand weight to hold everything steady. I thought it would pay for itself in six months. In some ways, it did — and in others, the day hire market turned out to be harder to replace than I expected.

Here's what I actually learned from running both in parallel, and how the economics look in 2026.

What a home setup genuinely does well

Tabletop and small product work. Skincare, accessories, books, food for a small restaurant client — anything that fits on a 1.2m wide table and doesn't require a seamless floor. For this category, a home or studio-flat setup is the rational choice. The hire cost of a full studio day (£300–£600 in London) for a job that takes four hours and produces forty tabletop SKUs is hard to justify when £1,500 in kit can do it from your spare room.

Retainer clients with consistent volume. If you have a client who sends monthly product batches of 20–40 small SKUs, a home setup running the same lighting configuration every month is genuinely efficient. You don't need to rebook, re-rig, or explain your setup to a studio assistant. The consistency is a feature.

Testing and development. Running creative tests, experimenting with lighting ratios, practicing with a new modifier — all of that is free once the kit is bought. Studio time costs money even when the camera isn't clicking.

What day hire can do that your spare room can't

Floor area. A proper studio cyclorama — 6m wide, 5m deep, with the floor swept clean — is a product photography asset that's genuinely difficult to replicate at home unless you own a large ground-floor space. As soon as a product brief requires a lifestyle context, a full-length clothing shot, or any scene that involves a model or a piece of furniture, you need floor area that most home setups simply don't have.

Ceiling height. Four metres of clearance for a large overhead soft box, a Profoto Pro-11 on a boom at 45 degrees, a background light on the floor pointing back — this is standard studio infrastructure that a domestic ceiling at 2.4m doesn't allow. I've tried adapting commercial lighting setups for low ceilings. The results are always a compromise.

Power supply. A 20-amp domestic ring main runs most small strobe setups fine. Once you're into three 600Ws heads plus modifiers, you're managing power carefully and probably daisy-chaining extension leads in a way that's inefficient and occasionally annoying. A professional studio with 100-amp 3-phase supply just runs whatever you plug in. No circuit management, no overloads, no conversations about which socket is on which circuit.

Professional context for clients. Some clients — particularly on their first shoot with you, or for work that involves a significant budget — feel differently about a production day in a professional studio versus a bedroom setup, regardless of the quality of the output. It's not logical but it's real.

The actual cost comparison

Building a capable home product setup from scratch in 2026. Realistic spec for serious small-product work:

2× Godox SK400II monolights (500Ws each): approximately £280 each, £560 total
2× large octaboxes or softboxes (90–120cm): £120–£180 total
Background paper stand and 3 colour rolls: £180–£260
3× C-stands, 2× boom arms: £400–£600
Manfrotto 055 tripod + ball head: £280–£380
Sandbags, cables, accessories: £120–£180

Total realistic home setup: £1,660–£2,160 for a capable entry-level rig. A more serious setup — moving to Profoto B10X units at around £1,200 each, better stands, a larger paper system — puts you at £4,000–£6,000 without stretching.

Day hire in London for a small to medium product studio: £300–£600 depending on space and included kit. Say you average £420/day. Your £2,000 home setup pays for itself after roughly 5 studio days' worth of comparable work. If you're shooting 20 studio days a year and 10 of those are small-product tabletop work you could do at home, the kit pays back in year one.

The maintenance and opportunity cost you don't model

Home setups have ongoing costs that are easy to ignore until they're not. Monolight flash tubes need replacing every 50,000 flashes or so — probably £40–£80 per head. Softbox diffusion panels yellow and degrade. Paper rolls run out. Sandbag weights split. None of these is expensive individually, but over three years they add up to several hundred pounds on a setup you've already paid for.

There's also the space cost. If your home studio is using a room that has another potential use — spare bedroom, office, storage — there's an implicit cost to that square footage. It's harder to quantify but worth acknowledging.

The rational answer for most photographers

Run both. A home setup for the repeatable tabletop work that doesn't justify studio hire costs. Day hire for jobs that need floor area, ceiling height, cyclorama, or the infrastructure that professional studios provide. The question is which hire threshold to set — at what minimum job size does studio hire become the right call?

My personal threshold: any job requiring a model or lifestyle context, or that involves products larger than about 50cm in any dimension, goes to studio hire. Everything smaller and tabletop-compatible stays at home.

That split has saved me meaningful studio costs over three years while keeping the client experience appropriate to each job type. And on days when I need the studio infrastructure I don't have — the 4.5m ceiling, the 6m cyc, the 3-phase power — day hire at a good UK studio is still the most efficient solution available.
