Food photography studios are everywhere. Studios that actually work for commercial food video -- the kind you're shooting for a brand's broadcast or digital campaign -- are a different category. I've been asked twice this year to produce food video content in spaces that were booked by production managers who assumed the disciplines were interchangeable. They're not. And the differences show up quickly and expensively once you're on set.

The misunderstanding is understandable. Both briefs need a kitchen. Both need food prep space. Both need specific lighting. But the requirements diverge from there in ways that matter enough to get wrong.

Sound is the dividing line

Food photography doesn't care about sound. You can work next to a kitchen exhaust fan, have a delivery buzzer going off in the background, and run a playlist at conversational volume. None of it affects the final image.

Commercial food video almost always involves recording production audio. Even if the final edit is music-only, you shoot with sync sound for timing reference and you'll frequently end up using more of that audio than you initially planned. A brand deciding at the edit stage that they want a genuine cutting sound or a sizzle in the mix will ask for your sync recording -- and if it's compromised by HVAC rumble or kitchen fan noise, you're going back to the studio.

The kitchen situation is the specific problem. Food photography studios that include a working kitchen typically run that kitchen's ventilation system whenever the cooker is in use. That's a constant low-frequency noise source that sits right in the frequency range that matters for audio. Some professional food studio kitchens have silenced or low-frequency extraction systems specifically for this reason. Most don't. Ask -- and ask to hear the room with the extraction running before you confirm the booking.

A workable minimum: STC-rated walls for the studio space, a silenced extraction solution in the kitchen, and a noise floor under 30dB in the shooting area with all building systems running. That last number is worth asking the studio directly rather than taking their word for it being quiet.

Power for continuous lighting

Food photography often uses flash -- Profoto B10s, Elinchrom monoblocks, sometimes a single bounce flash for small tabletop work. The recycle time and output consistency of these units suits single-frame food work well.

Food video needs continuous light. You can't flash a camera that's recording at 25fps. And the lighting requirements for video food work are typically higher than for stills -- you're controlling depth of field, managing motion of liquid and steam, and often running at 50fps or 100fps for slow-motion inserts. Those higher frame rates need more light or a wider aperture to expose correctly. That means more wattage.

An Aputure 600d Pro at full output draws around 600W. A pair of them -- which is a minimal key and fill for a properly lit hero plate shot -- draws 1,200W continuously. Add an Arri SkyPanel S60-C for overhead ambience and you're at 1,680W before the monitors, laptop, and any kitchen appliances. That's a dedicated 32A circuit minimum, not the studio's standard 13A ring main.

Colour accuracy matters more for food video than almost any other brief. Wrong colour temperature on a chocolate sauce or a strawberry glaze is an immediate client rejection. Bi-colour LED units that can be dialled to match ambient daylight or tungsten practicals are the standard tool for food video lighting now. The Aputure LS 600c, the Litepanels Gemini 2x1, and the Arri SkyPanel range are all used regularly on food campaigns. Power draw for all of these exceeds what a standard studio ring main handles safely.

Floor space and camera movement

Still food photography lives at a table. The camera is overhead, at 45 degrees, or occasionally at a low angle. It doesn't move. The crew can work in a fairly tight space -- 40 sqm is workable for a single-table setup with a photographer, assistant, and food stylist.

Food video involves camera movement. A hero shot of liquid being poured into a glass might call for a macro lens on a slider moving laterally as the pour happens. A packaging reveal might use a dolly pull-back from close detail to wide context. Even relatively simple food video work typically involves a gimbal run or a slider setup at some point in the day. Those setups need clear floor paths and enough distance in front of the table to execute the move.

Minimum practical floor area for commercial food video: 80 sqm for a single-table setup with camera movement. For a multi-set day -- a hero prep scene plus a serving scene plus a lifestyle eating scene -- 150 sqm is the floor and ideally 200+ sqm. You're building and striking multiple setups across the day and the space to do that without everything being in each other's way is the difference between a smooth day and a chaotic one.

The kitchen spec for video work

For food photography stills work, the kitchen brief is about having a space to prep the food with the right tools, surfaces, and equipment. Induction hobs rather than gas (more controllable heat distribution), good worktop space, a double sink, fridges and freezers. Most properly equipped food photography studio kitchens meet this spec.

For video, the kitchen also needs to function as a shooting location. That means it needs to be shootable -- interesting surfaces, aesthetically considered fittings, and enough space for a camera position that isn't right against the back wall. A kitchen designed purely for food preparation may have fine prep space but feel like a domestic utility room on camera.

Additionally, video kitchen sequences often involve real-time cooking with steam, smoke, and splattering. The studio kitchen needs adequate ventilation for this without that ventilation being audible on the audio recording. Some food video productions deal with this by doing all the audio-sensitive work first, then switching to practical cooking sequences with the extraction running. That works if the schedule allows for it but requires production planning that often gets overlooked at the booking stage.

Art direction and prop storage

Food video productions typically arrive with more props than food photography commissions. Tabletop linens, crockery sets, glassware, flatware, cutting boards, hero and backup hero plates, background surfaces. The volume of props is higher because you're building multiple scenes in the same day and the art director hasn't pre-selected to a single layout.

Studios with good prop storage -- locked, clean, organised -- are valuable for multi-day food video commissions. A studio with a prop room where you can leave items overnight, retrieve them in the morning already organised, and not share the space with a previous booking's leftovers is genuinely worth extra per day. This detail rarely appears in listings.

The catering question

Food video productions are unusual in that the set materials -- the actual food -- are consumed and replaced throughout the day. Hero items (the perfect pour, the hero slice) need to be prepared, shot, and replaced before they wilt or cool. This means the food stylist and their assistant are cycling through prep, shooting, and disposal constantly.

The studio's waste management infrastructure matters here. A kitchen with adequate waste disposal, a dishwasher that runs during the day without sounding like an aircraft engine, and enough fridge space for all the prep ingredients matters. On a 10-hour food video day with a full crew, the kitchen logistics are almost as complex as the camera logistics.

Rates for food video studio hire

Commercial food video studios in the UK that are properly spec'd for video production -- continuous lighting power, low noise floor, shootable kitchen, adequate floor space -- typically command a premium over standard food photography hire rates. Expect roughly 600-1,000 per day for a properly equipped London space, or 350-600 outside London in cities with a food video production market.

That premium is usually worth it. A studio that's 200 cheaper but has an audible HVAC system and inadequate power will cost you a day rate in post-production audio work if the client decides they want to use the sync sound.
