The shoot that cost me half a day before I'd taken a frame

February, a Peckham studio — one I'd used twice before for smaller product work. Five sofas, two armchairs, a coffee table, a rug. Simple enough catalogue brief. Except nobody had thought to check that the service entrance was a 750mm fire door with a hydraulic closer that wouldn't stay propped open. I had six Godox AD600Pro heads, two large scrims, and a full grip kit in the van, none of which helped me get a corner sofa through a 750mm gap.

We stood in a drizzly car park for forty minutes while the studio manager hunted for a wedge, then a screwdriver to temporarily pull the arm off. By the time we got the first sofa through, I'd lost half my morning. My client called to ask how things were going.

That's the education furniture photography gives you. Fast, expensive, completely avoidable.

Why furniture shoots are different in kind

Most commercial photography kit fits through a standard door. Your tripod, your C-stands, your Profoto B10 Plus heads in a roller case — fine. A 2.2-metre corner sofa does not fit through a standard door. A superking bed frame doesn't navigate a tight turn in a service corridor. And a 12-piece modular shelving unit — the kind you're hired to make look effortlessly liveable — requires its own logistics plan before you've even considered lighting.

I've shot hundreds of commercial briefs in studios across East and West London, and furniture jobs consistently produce the most pre-shoot stress. Not because they're technically complicated. Because the access and floor requirements are specific in ways that general studio listings rarely capture.

Here's the checklist I now run before every booking.

Access first: door widths that actually matter

You need a minimum clear door width of 900mm for a standard two-seat sofa. But 950mm or wider makes life significantly easier once you're manoeuvring with a removal crew on a day rate. Double doors that open to at least 1,800mm clear are ideal for anything upholstered and wide.

Beds are the awkward ones. A kingsize bedframe — whether flat-packed or assembled — often needs a doorway that's 1,000mm wide, or a split route: in through double doors, rotated in a lobby. Ask for floor plans, not just photographs. A studio can have beautiful wide double doors onto the street and then a right-angle turn 3 metres in that kills a headboard dead.

Loading bays matter enormously. A proper raised loading dock at Transit van tailgate height — roughly 850 to 900mm from the ground — means you can slide furniture straight off the van. Ground-level entries mean lifting, which means more crew time and more risk of corner damage. If you're hiring a Ford Transit Custom or a Luton box van for your prop run, you need to know whether that entry actually works before you're parked outside it.

Always ask: is there a goods lift? What are its dimensions? A standard commercial goods lift is roughly 1,500mm wide by 2,000mm deep, but many converted studio spaces in London don't have one at all. If it's all ground floor, fine. If there are stairs, have the conversation about crew numbers and damage liability before the day, not on it.

The cyclorama question: depth is the real issue

Photographers obsess over cyc width. And understandably — you want that wide infinity curve for a flat-lay bed shot or a sofa in a lifestyle context. But depth is where furniture shoots live or die. So why does nobody list it properly?

For a standard two-seat sofa in a three-quarter lifestyle angle, you want at least 5 metres of shooting depth from the cyc wall to where your camera sits. For a corner sofa or a modular three-seater, I'd say 6.5 metres minimum — the sofa itself takes up 2 to 2.5 metres, and you still need working distance for any talent, your lighting positions, and actual camera-to-subject space.

Beds need more still. A superking styled with a headboard, proper bedding, and two bedside tables will eat 3 metres of floor. You want 7-plus metres of studio depth for any kind of wide establishing shot. Budget floor depth before you budget anything else. A studio floor of at least 150sqm gives you room to stage multiple set positions without striking between shots; anything under 100sqm is tight for serious homeware work.

Dining tables are deceptive. A 2.4-metre table surrounded by chairs? Budget 4 metres of width and 7 metres of depth for a decent three-quarter angle. I've seen photographers try to squeeze this into a 4.5-metre-deep cyc, and the result looks exactly as cramped as it sounds.

And the cyc floor condition matters more for furniture than for anything else you'll shoot. Every scuff, crack, or painted seam reads differently under the raking light you'll often need for textured fabrics and wood grain. Check recent shoot photos — not the studio's hero images from 2019.

Floor load ratings: the question most photographers forget

This one caught me off guard early in my career. A converted warehouse studio in Bermondsey had a wooden mezzanine-style shooting floor rated to 300kg per square metre. Fine for most commercial work. Not fine for a marble-topped dining table combined with a cast-iron range-style cooker that a homeware brand wanted in the same hero shot.

If you're shooting heavy stone furniture — slate tables, marble countertops, terracotta pots at any real scale — get the floor load rating in writing. Proper commercial studio floors should rate to 500kg/m² or better. Some of the newer purpose-built spaces in Park Royal and Tottenham are rated higher. Some converted spaces in Shoreditch are rated lower, and they won't mention it unless you ask directly.

Studios that actually work for large homeware in London

I'm not going to give you a ranked list here, because studios change hands and specs change fast. But I'll tell you what to look for and roughly where to look.

East London — Hackney Wick, Tottenham, and parts of Dalston — has the industrial bones. Ex-factory units, high ceilings (5 metres or more), proper loading doors, ground-level access. These are the spaces that genuinely accommodate furniture shoots without compromise. Expect £400–£900 per day for a large-format space with a built cyclorama in Hackney Wick, with wide variation depending on ceiling height and available daylight.

West London — Park Royal and parts of Acton — tends towards slightly newer commercial conversions. Some excellent spaces here with dedicated furniture-load access and easier crew parking. Day rates in similar territory: £450–£950.

South London — Bermondsey, Deptford, Peckham — has the creative energy but is more mixed on technical spec. Some genuinely excellent studios. But also spaces that have positioned themselves for furniture work without truly having the floor depth. Daylight-heavy studios in Bermondsey can be beautiful for the right brief. Check that depth figure twice.

The Shoreditch cluster gets booked fast and is often priced at fashion editorial rates. Fine if the budget supports it and you specifically need the daylight aesthetic. Not my first call when I need a wide, deep, controllable cyc for a white-seamless-paper product shot on a tight schedule.

How to brief a studio owner for a furniture job

Look, most studio owners are used to fielding enquiries from fashion photographers and smaller product shooters. They're not always used to being asked the right homeware questions. So be specific. Here's what goes into every enquiry email I send now:

Clear door width at the loading entrance, in mm
Any turns or obstacles between entrance and studio floor
Lift dimensions if applicable, or confirmation it's all ground floor
Cyclorama curve dimensions: floor depth and total width
Cyc floor condition — specifically: recent repairs, repaints, visible seams
Floor load rating in kg/m²
Whether the cyc floor and walls are solid or painted (solid takes scuffs better)
Parking for a Transit-sized vehicle and a separate crew car
Earliest load-in time and whether there's a night-before access option

That last point matters more than it might seem. If you're shooting a full furniture set over two days, loading in the evening before — even paying a half-day rate for access — saves you hours of call-time on day one. Good studio managers will get this immediately. The ones who look confused when you ask are often running spaces that aren't really built for it.

The prop van calculation nobody does until it's too late

A Ford Transit van (standard wheelbase, low roof) is approximately 1,870mm wide and 1,960mm tall. A Transit Custom is similar. If you're hiring a prop van, or your props company is sending one, those are your clearance dimensions. Check the loading door against them before you confirm the studio.

A Luton box van — the one with the tail lift, standard for furniture removal companies — runs roughly 2,100mm wide and 2,350mm tall. Most proper studio loading bays handle this. But I've been to studios in converted Victorian railway arches in Deptford where the entrance ceiling clearance was exactly 2,200mm. Fine. Until it isn't.

The catch: studios routinely list parking as "available" without specifying whether that means a marked bay, a loading slot, or "there's sometimes space on the road outside." For a furniture shoot, you need 30 to 45 minutes of dedicated vehicle access at load-in and again at load-out. Put that in your enquiry, and treat a vague answer as a flag.

Lighting for large furniture: what the job actually needs

Here's the thing: furniture lighting isn't complicated, but it is power-hungry. You're filling large volumes. A corner sofa shot to read like a room needs light that behaves like a room — and that takes output.

I run Godox AD600Pro heads for most of my furniture work. 600Ws per head, battery-powered, and I can run four or five into a scene without the cable management headache of mains-tethered HMI rigs. For controlled work on a deep cyclorama — filling a corner sofa scene or getting an even wash across a 2.4-metre table — I'll typically work with three to four heads, plus a large scrim or two for diffusion.

If the studio has in-house grip — proper C-stands, boom arms, large diffusion frames — that saves me significant van space. Ask what's included. Some studios include a basic lighting kit in the day rate. Others charge per item and it adds up fast. An Aputure 600d Pro is a lovely bit of kit; being charged £180 per day to hire one at a studio where you're already paying £750 is less lovely.

Tungsten is making a quiet comeback for wood tones and warm-coloured textiles. If a studio has tungsten house lights, find out whether they're on a dimmer and what the colour temperature actually is. Mixing tungsten with Profoto B10 Plus strobe heads requires either a gel plan or a deliberate colour temperature decision for each source. Neither is hard — but it's much easier when you've sorted it before you arrive.

The floor condition issue, one more time

I keep coming back to this because it's the thing that generates post-production time nobody budgeted for. Furniture sits on the cyclorama floor. It scuffs it, it leaves leg indentations, and the previous client may not have been as careful as you need them to have been.

Ask to see photographs taken within the last month. Not the hero images — recent actual shoot photos, ideally taken in raking or cross light that would reveal floor condition. Good studio managers have these. A studio that can't provide them is a small risk signal worth taking seriously.

Some studios in Park Royal and Hackney Wick have started offering short video walk-throughs on request. Fifteen minutes on a video call, live walk of the space. I've found that genuinely useful for large briefs. It takes almost no time and saves you a nasty morning surprise.

Finding the right space

The honest truth is that most studio directories aren't built with furniture shooters in mind. They show you beautiful photographs of empty cyc spaces without listing floor depth, door width, or load rating. So you end up emailing five studios, waiting two days for replies, and making decisions on incomplete information.

It's worth using directories that let you filter by technical spec — floor area, access type, cyc dimensions — because that narrows the shortlist before you start making calls. Creative Studio Hire lists photography and video studios across the UK with the kind of practical detail that actually matters for large-format work. If you're doing a furniture or homeware brief and need a sensible shortlist quickly, it's a good place to start before you pick up the phone.

But wherever you search: get the door width first. Everything else follows from there.
