Last-minute bookings are more common than the industry pretends

Clients change briefs. Shoots get moved. Equipment turns up damaged and you need to reshoot somewhere that isn't your living room. I've booked studios in London with four hours' notice, twice in the last eighteen months, and both times it was fine. But only because I knew where to look and what to ask.

The platforms want you to plan seven days ahead. That's when they surface their best results, fill their recommended slots, and nudge you towards fully staffed studios. The same-day market is messier — fewer listings, more direct calls, more negotiation — but it exists, and it's bigger than most people realise.

Here's how to work it.

What counts as same-day

For the purposes of a working shoot day, "same-day" means confirming a booking and arriving within six to eight hours. That's the realistic window. Anything under four hours gets genuinely difficult unless you're based in east London and can get to a self-access studio in Hackney Wick or Dalston in thirty minutes.

"Last-minute" is broader — booking in the forty-eight hour window before the shoot. That's where most of the inventory actually sits. Studios that haven't filled a slot by the morning of the day before are often willing to deal.

Peerspace and Giggster — useful, but not ideal for same-day

Both platforms have some same-day availability, but neither is built for it. Peerspace's default booking flow asks for a date and time ahead of time, and many hosts have set a minimum advance notice — 24 hours or 48 hours is common. Giggster is similar. You can filter for instant-book listings on both, which is the closest either platform gets to a same-day marketplace, but the selection is limited.

Peerspace charges hosts 20% per booking and adds a guest processing fee on top. Giggster's host commission is 19%. Both fees are built into the platform pricing, and neither platform offers a "last-minute deal" mechanism. If you're booking through Peerspace at 9am for a shoot at 2pm, you're paying the full listed rate — there's no markdown for filling a vacant slot. That's a gap in both platforms' models that some studios have quietly worked around by going direct.

Self-access studios — the same-day sweet spot

Self-access studios are the actual same-day market in London. These are spaces that operate with a keybox code or a smart lock, no studio manager on-site, and a booking system that can confirm and issue access codes in under an hour.

There's a decent cluster of these in the east: Hackney Wick, Dalston, Tottenham, Walthamstow, and further south in Peckham and Deptford. The west London contingent — Park Royal, Ladbroke Grove, Shepherd's Bush — tends to have slightly larger spaces that require more lead time because of loading access.

Self-access works for same-day if the shoot doesn't require a studio manager to sign off on kit, the space is dry hire and you're bringing your own gear, and the booking confirmation system is automated rather than requiring a human to respond to an email. Studios running Bookwhen or Squarespace Scheduling with automated payment and code delivery are the ones to look for.

What self-access doesn't work well for: anything that involves models or talent (no changing rooms or waiting areas), shoots that need specific wet-hire kit checked and confirmed working, or anything with specialist requirements like a working kitchen or a drive-in loading bay that needs to be unlocked by a keyholder.

Calling directly — the fastest route

For anything other than a solo e-commerce shoot, calling the studio directly is often faster than any platform. Not emailing — calling. A studio manager who picks up at 10am can confirm a booking, walk you through what's available, and have you in the space by 1pm. The same conversation by email might take until 3pm to resolve.

Studios that have had cancellations the night before are often especially receptive. They've already blocked the slot, the space is prepped, and they'd rather fill it at a small discount than leave it empty. I've paid 15–20% under the listed rate on same-day bookings simply by calling and asking what they could do for a confirmed booking in the next four hours. That works more often than not.

The studios in Shoreditch and Hackney that cater to commercial clients tend to have a number that rings an actual human during working hours. South London studios in Peckham and Deptford vary — some have full-time managers, some run on a part-time basis and are harder to reach before noon.

What's actually available same-day in 2026

The honest answer: mostly small to medium spaces (under 150 sqm), mostly dry hire, mostly self-access. The large, fully equipped wet-hire studios — the 400 sqm spaces in Park Royal with a full grip department and Arri SkyPanel rigging — are booked far enough in advance that same-day is rarely available, and when they do have a gap it's usually a cancellation that happened early enough to re-list properly.

For same-day, you're typically looking at:

80–150 sqm daylight or strobe studio, white walls, 3m–4m ceiling height
Dry hire, 13A sockets, basic white cyc or backdrop rail
£70–£110/hour or £250–£420 for a half-day
Self-access or a single keyholder on-site

That's enough for e-commerce product, headshots, beauty/skincare content, social media content, and small fashion shoots with one or two looks. Not enough for automotive, large-scale set builds, or anything that needs 3-phase power and a production team.

What to check before you confirm a same-day booking

Speed matters on same-day, but not so much that you skip the basics. Things I always confirm before handing over payment:

Is it actually available? Some platforms don't update availability in real time. Call or message to confirm before you pay, especially if the booking is through a platform that allows manual approval — you don't want to find out on arrival that the booking was declined after you've already left home.

What power is available? For flash work, you need to know if you're dealing with 13A circuits only, or if the studio has 16A or 32A commando sockets. A 13A circuit runs about 3kW peak — fine for a Profoto B10X or Godox AD600, not fine for a pair of Profoto Pro-11s or anything with a heavy pack.

Is the cyc in usable condition? Same-day slots are often post-cancellation. Ask if the backdrop is clean and what state the floor is in. A scuffed or marked cyc that would normally be touched up between bookings may not have been cleaned if the previous job cancelled late.

Is there loading access? If you're bringing kit, ask specifically about how you get it in. A ground-floor unit with a roller shutter is a completely different proposition from a second-floor studio with a goods lift that's only operated by a keyholder who isn't on-site until noon.

Cancellation terms for same-day bookings. Most studios won't refund same-day bookings once confirmed. Some charge a non-refundable deposit. That's fair — they've held the slot — but make sure you know the terms before you pay, especially if the shoot is contingent on something else (client confirmation, talent availability).

Studio directories as a search tool

Google is not great for finding same-day available studios. The SEO result on the first page might be a studio that closed in 2024. Platform results are sorted by algorithm, not real-time availability. The most reliable approach is a specialist directory that shows current studio inventory by location and lets you contact studios directly — then you call the ones that look right.

That's the use case Creative Studio Hire is built for. Filter by location, size, and features, then call the top three. Ten minutes of phone calls will confirm same-day availability faster than forty minutes of platform searching.

The edges of same-day availability

One thing I've found: Tuesday and Thursday same-day slots are harder to fill from a studio's perspective. Monday and Friday cancellations happen more — clients pulling back on early-week production or end-of-week wrap shoots. Wednesday is also reasonably easy because it's mid-production-week and studios that haven't sold their midweek slots are often willing to negotiate.

Avoid trying to book a large or specialist studio same-day for a late afternoon slot. By the time you get on the phone at 1pm and navigate the booking, you might have three usable hours left. Half-day starts of 9am or 10am, booked by 7am at the latest, give you the most room to work with.

And always, always have a backup option in mind before you call. The studio you want might be taken. Knowing that your second choice is the self-access space in Dalston that confirmed by email at 8.30am means you're not scrambling if the first call doesn't land.

The broader point

Same-day studio hire in London isn't a niche. It's a working part of the market that photographers who shoot regularly in the city use regularly. The trick is to know which studios operate the kind of infrastructure that makes fast booking possible — automated scheduling, self-access codes, a manager who answers the phone — and to keep that list updated.

A good same-day booking practice: keep five or six studios bookmarked with their direct phone numbers. Not platform links — direct numbers. Next time a client changes the brief at 9am and you need a room by noon, you'll be glad you did.
