Three setups. One studio. Eight hours. And a client who's somehow convinced themselves a product launch brief is basically just a normal product shoot, only bigger.

I've run those days. Some landed well. Most had one phase done properly, one acceptably, and one at speed because we ran out of morning. The problem was never the photographer. It was the studio — wrong for the brief, or not spec'd before the booking went in.

Here's what I check now before committing to any studio for a launch campaign.

The three-setup problem

A product launch brief usually breaks into three distinct photographic modes. Each one wants a different room setup.

First there's the tabletop or macro work — jewellery, cosmetics, small tech, anything where you're at close focusing distance and texture is the whole point. This needs a stable table at the right height, a ceiling rig or overhead arm for top-down work, and a power circuit that can handle continuous lighting without tripping the ring main. Floor area matters less here than vertical clearance and a vibration-free surface.

Then there's the hero or full-product shot. Bottle against a gradient. Full shoe on a seamless. A camera body on a surface with rim light. You're working at longer distances, using strobes at high output, and the backdrop needs to be pristine. Seamless paper goes through rolls at this output level. If the studio charges extra per roll over the included amount, that cost adds up fast on a commercial booking.

And then lifestyle. Someone using the product, or a contextual flat-lay, or an on-brand environment. This is the one that catches people out. You can't lifestyle-shoot a face wash in a white cyc with no props. You need surfaces, textures, set dressing. Either you build it or you book a studio that already has it. And the floor area for lifestyle work at 35mm focal lengths is significantly more than the hero or tabletop phases need.

Floor area, and why the maths compounds

For a tabletop setup alone, 300 square feet is workable. The rig goes up, the product goes on the table, you need maybe three feet of shooting clearance. Fine.

For the hero setup, 800 to 1,000 square feet starts to feel comfortable once you add the seamless roll, two or three light stands, a reflector frame and enough shooting distance for an 85mm equivalent to do the work without distortion. Tighter rooms force wider glass, which bends product shapes. Not ideal for a hero campaign image going on packaging.

Lifestyle needs depth. A kitchen-surface setup at 35mm wants fifteen to twenty feet of working distance behind the subject. Studios that describe this as flexible set space and mean a single rack of props in the corner are not the same as studios with a dedicated lifestyle zone.

So what you're actually looking for, for a three-setup brief, is either a studio large enough to run simultaneous zones — some East London spaces above about 2,000 square feet can manage this — or a venue with two adjacent rooms bookable together at a combined rate.

Power — the thing people underestimate

I tripped a studio ring main once running an Aputure 600d, a laptop, a kettle and a portable fan on the same 13A circuit. The lighting was fine. The kettle was the problem. But the point stands: tabletop continuous work draws harder than people assume.

Two Aputure 600d units for colour-accurate product work pull around 1,200W between them. Add a hair light, tethering laptop and phone charging and you're at 80% of a standard 13A ring main before the client has arrived. Studios with independent 16A sockets on each wall rather than one shared ring main are the ones that stop this being a problem.

For the hero setup, high-output strobes at full power draw harder still. I've used Profoto Pro-11 packs on commercial product work and they demand headroom on the circuit. Ask specifically: not 'do you have enough power' but 'is the 32A socket on its own circuit or shared?' There's a meaningful difference.

And if the brief includes lifestyle video alongside stills — and more launch campaigns do now — you might be running a Godox SL-150 or similar continuous light all day. Three-phase becomes relevant if you're bringing an Arri SkyPanel S60-C for a living set. Most London studios capable of this brief will spec it in the listing. But ask directly if it's not there.

Props, set dressing and the kitchen question

I've booked beautiful studios for product launch briefs and realised on the morning that the props were never coming. My prep notes said 'studio has prop storage' and what the studio had was a single wooden crate with some coloured card and a copper plant pot.

Studios with proper built-in prop rooms tend to cluster in East London. Hackney Wick has several spaces that take this seriously, with real prop inventories that include surfaces, linen and ceramic pieces. A couple of spaces near Tottenham do similar work. In Manchester, two studios in Ancoats have permanent lifestyle sets with props included in the day rate. Worth paying a premium for on a brand launch brief because the alternative is spending an hour of day-rate time sourcing props yourself.

For food and drink launches specifically, you want a kitchen with a gas hob, prep surfaces at working height, cold storage for the product and neutral-coloured walls. A microwave and a kettle in a corner studio is not a food studio. There are studios in London, Manchester and Leeds specifically built for food content, and they're worth the slightly higher day rate for the right brief.

Timing the day

Here's the thing most briefs don't account for: set turnaround time between phases. You don't finish the tabletop setup and walk straight into the hero shot. You strike the table, move the rigging, roll the seamless, position the strobe stands, do a test exposure, adjust, and then shoot. That's forty minutes minimum if you're fast. On a day with three distinct phases, you're losing two hours to transitions alone.

The day structure that works: set up the most technically demanding phase first, usually the hero or cyc work, and get it lit before the call time. That's a pre-light, even if it's just thirty minutes of the shoot day. Tabletop second — compact, can stay rigged to one side while you work. Lifestyle last, which usually has more flexibility and doesn't need strobe precision.

Some studios offer access before call time at a reduced cost — thirty minutes of setup before the official booking starts. It's worth asking. Even half an hour before the client arrives changes the whole shape of the day.

What a multi-setup brief actually costs

In London, a commercial studio capable of all three setups properly — 1,500-plus square feet, independent power circuits, access to props, a daylight zone — runs around £700 to £1,200 for a full day. Expensive for a single-phase brief, but proportionate for a launch campaign that needs to deliver across print, retail packaging and digital.

East London spaces in Hackney Wick and the Tottenham belt tend to come in at the lower end and offer prop access. Park Royal has larger-format spaces if you need the floor. Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds offer comparable spec at 30 to 40% less, which matters if the product ships nationally and there's no reason to put the production cost in London.

Half-day rates for just the tabletop or hero component start around £280 to £350 in East London. For a brand that wants macro and hero work without the lifestyle phase, a well-spec'd half-day in a focused product studio often delivers more than a full day in a room that's trying to be everything.

The brief that actually works

Send the studio a proper brief before you commit. Not 'we're shooting a product' but: the full setup list with product dimensions, number of distinct phases, wattage requirements for your lighting, whether you need a kitchen or prop storage, and whether you're running video alongside stills.

Studios that answer the power question specifically — 'yes, there's a 32A socket on its own circuit in the north-west corner' — have had this conversation before. Studios that say 'we have plenty of power' without detail probably haven't.

And be honest with the client about what fits in eight hours. Three setups is a full production. If the brief is properly spec'd, it works. If it's three briefs dressed up as one, someone's going home with half a card.
