I've made this mistake and it cost me a reshoot. Booked a studio with a vinyl floor for a flat-lay jewellery campaign, spent the day wrestling with reflections I couldn't kill without gelling every light, and delivered selects that looked fine on my screen and muddy on the client's. Went back with seamless paper and did it again in half the time.

The floor surface question in product photography is genuinely important and almost never gets discussed properly. Everyone talks about backdrops. The floor is treated as an afterthought until it isn't.

What seamless paper actually does

Seamless paper — the rolls that come down from a crossbar and curve to become the floor — is the standard in most UK photography studios. The reason is the sweep. When paper curves from wall to floor, it eliminates the visible horizon line between wall and ground, creating a clean floating-product effect that's particularly useful for still life, product work, and anything shot at eye level or lower.

Paper is also matte. No hot spots, no directional sheen, no reflections of your softbox hitting the camera. This is particularly useful for product categories where you want a clean, neutral environment — white goods, food, soft furnishings, skincare. The product reads against the white rather than competing with floor reflections.

Standard seamless rolls in UK studios come in 2.72m width and around 11m length. The common colours are white, black, a mid-grey, and a couple of graduated colours — but for product work, white and black cover the vast majority of briefs.

The catch: paper marks. Foot traffic marks it. Dust marks it. A product with a rough base marks it on contact. On a full day of product photography with multiple sets and multiple products, you're often pulling through more than one roll. Some studios charge for additional rolls beyond the first (typically £12–25 per additional roll depending on the brand and width). Know this before the day.

What vinyl flooring does

Vinyl studio flooring — often laid as large format tiles or a single continuous sheet — is durable, cleanable, and permanent. Studios that regularly host fashion and lifestyle work often have vinyl in the main shooting area because it survives heel marks, furniture drag, and daily traffic without replacement.

The issue for product photography is the surface texture and sheen. Even matte-finish vinyl has a character to it — a slight directional texture from the manufacturing process — that shows up in low-angle shots, particularly with raking light. It's not always a problem. But when you're shooting glassware, ceramics, or anything specular at low angle, the floor texture becomes part of the image in a way that's difficult to control consistently.

Vinyl also picks up static and therefore dust. On a long product day, you'll find yourself wiping the floor between every set. Not a disaster, but worth factoring into your workflow.

Where vinyl wins: lifestyle shots, fashion photography with model and furniture, anything where the floor reads as a floor rather than a neutral environment. It's easier to work on, it's resilient, and it can look genuinely good in the right context.

The decision framework

Here's how I think about it:

Use seamless paper if: you're shooting products with specular surfaces (glass, metal, ceramics), you need a clean sweep with no visible floor joint, you're doing flat-lays or overhead shots where the background needs to read as completely neutral, or the brief calls for colour-matched backgrounds (paper comes in more colours than vinyl).

Use vinyl if: you're doing lifestyle or fashion work where the floor reads as part of the environment, you need a durable surface that survives a day of heavy foot traffic and furniture moving, or the brief calls for a specific textured floor look (wood-effect vinyl, stone-effect vinyl) as part of the set.

The grey zone is clean tabletop work: small products, overhead shots, minimal floor visible. In this case the floor surface is largely irrelevant because you're not seeing it. But watch for vinyl reflections if you're using any raking light at low angle across a table surface.

When the studio has vinyl and you need paper

Most studios with a vinyl or hardwood floor can rig seamless paper over it — either by running a crossbar at head height or by using a freestanding backdrop stand. The paper then lands on the vinyl and covers it. You lose the true floor sweep (the paper will have a slight crease where it transitions from vertical to horizontal rather than a proper curve), but for many product briefs this is fine.

Ask the studio before you book: can they rig seamless over the existing floor? And can they confirm the ceiling height to the rigging point, because you need enough overhead clearance to get the paper to curve at the base rather than fold. Less than 3.5m to the crossbar makes this difficult for full-product shots that include the floor.

Practical questions to ask when booking

What's the primary floor surface in the main shooting space?
Is seamless paper available and included in the day rate, or is it a chargeable extra?
How many rolls do they keep in stock, and what's the charge for additional rolls?
Can seamless be rigged over the existing floor if needed?
What colours do they stock (white, black, grey minimum is a reasonable ask)?
Is the floor clean at the start of the day? I've arrived at studios where the previous booking left a paper floor in rough condition and no one had replaced it. Not acceptable, but it happens.

The post production impact

Here's the thing that makes this decision more than aesthetic: the wrong floor surface adds hours to post. A vinyl floor with inconsistent reflections on a product shoot means manual retouching per frame, not a global adjustment. On a 50-image brief, that's a significant cost that wasn't in the budget.

Seamless paper, shot well with consistent light, is extremely clean in post. Background removal is faster. Colour correction is more predictable. The selects look professional on a consistent ground.

I've seen photographers undercharge for post time because they assumed the studio floor would be easy. It's always worth a conversation with the studio and, if in doubt, requesting a test shot of the floor under your intended lighting setup before you commit to a full day rate.
