I've been booked as a casting photographer twice. Once in a cramped East London studio with one door, a sofa in reception, and talent walking past each other in both directions. Once in a clean, properly-laid-out space in Manchester where the whole day ran without a single awkward encounter and the casting director left happy.

The difference between those two experiences was almost entirely the room. Here's what a casting session actually needs from a studio — and why most photographers and most studios get it wrong.

What a casting session is, technically

A casting call might mean actor auditions on tape, model tests for an agency, or a combination of stills and video for a commercial brief. What they all have in common: you're seeing a lot of people in a short window, capturing them on-camera under controlled conditions, and the flow of people in and out needs to work without chaos.

The photography element is usually casting stills — basic three-quarter or full-length shots on a neutral background, sometimes also a head-and-shoulders, often with minimal styling. These are not portfolio images. They're reference shots for the casting director and client to review. The brief is consistent, reproducible lighting, no distractions, and a quick turnaround per subject.

The spec that casting directors need and rarely articulate

Two separate spaces. This is the first thing. You need a waiting area that is physically separated from the shooting area — not just on the other side of a partition, but genuinely separate. Talent arriving should not be able to see who's already in the shooting space, and people who've finished should be able to leave without passing the queue. Studios with a single room and an open-plan reception almost always fail this test.

A neutral background, not a white cyc. Most commercial casting stills use a mid-grey or light grey seamless — it reads as neutral on the reference sheet, doesn't blow out under direct flash, and separates clearly from all clothing colours. Some casting directors specifically want a graduated background from mid-grey to white. Bring seamless rolls yourself if the studio only has white — it's around £12 a roll from most suppliers and worth it for the consistency.

Fixed camera position and consistent light. You're shooting dozens of subjects at the same settings, same framing. The studio needs to be stable — no windows that change the ambient throughout the day, no equipment in the way of your shooting line, nowhere that a subject can stand slightly out of your marked position and blow the consistency. Mark the floor. The studio needs floor space you can tape without them caring.

Good sound. If you're doing self-tapes or casting video alongside stills, ambient noise is critical. A studio near a main road, a gym upstairs, or with HVAC that sounds like a helicopter is going to create audio problems on every take. Ask specifically: what's the ambient sound level and what are the main noise sources? This is the question most photographers forget and then regret on the day.

The privacy and flow question

In actor casting especially, talent don't want to be seen by each other while waiting. It creates competitive anxiety before anyone's been in the room, and if agents or managers are attending — which happens on larger commercial castings — the logistics of who's where compound fast.

Studios with a separate entrance and exit — or even just a layout where the waiting area is around a corner from the shooting space — change the dynamic completely. I've run casting days in rooms where the sole door faces the shooting area and the experience for the talent is genuinely uncomfortable. It shows in the footage.

And practically: you need enough seating for six to eight people in the waiting area comfortably. Not a sofa and a chair. Real seating, good lighting, somewhere to put a coat and a bag. Casting is one of those briefs where the subject's experience in the waiting area directly affects what you capture in the studio.

Video spec alongside stills

Most commercial castings now require video capture in addition to stills. The lighting setup for stills and for video casting is similar — a key light, a fill, something on the background — but the framing logic is different. Casting video is usually shot at chest height looking slightly down, with enough breathing room in the frame for the subject to move their hands.

A fixed tripod position with a good tethered monitor setup is what you want. For the video component, a Godox SL-150 or similar continuous LED at 5600K gives consistent daylight-balanced output that works for both stills on a longer sync and video without flicker. Bring your own kit for video if the studio's video lighting is older tungsten heads or variable-output fluorescents — colour inconsistency across dozens of subjects is a pain to correct and defeats the purpose of controlled casting conditions.

What this costs in London

Studios appropriate for casting sessions — with two distinct spaces or a generous waiting area, neutral backgrounds and quiet ambient conditions — tend to run £50 to £90 per hour in London, with half-day rates around £180 to £320 for the better-spec'd spaces. Studios in East London — Hackney, Dalston, Shoreditch — sometimes offer purpose-configured casting or audition spaces as a specific product rather than just studio hire. These book up quickly for extended commercial castings, so three to four weeks of lead time for anything with more than twenty subjects is sensible.

Outside London, Manchester has dedicated casting studio capability — particularly in the Northern Quarter, which has a concentration of acting and talent agencies that creates steady demand for this brief. Birmingham and Edinburgh both have usable spaces, though the purpose-built casting studio product is less explicitly developed outside London and Manchester.

The brief to send the studio

Not 'studio hire for a casting' but:

Number of subjects expected and session duration
Whether you need a separate waiting area and how many people it needs to hold comfortably
Whether you're capturing video as well as stills, and if so, what sound requirements apply
Background preference — grey seamless, white cyc, or specific requirement
Whether agents, managers or casting directors will also be present and need space
Whether there are child subjects involved — studios need to be notified of minors and have appropriate policies in place

The studio that comes back with specific answers to all of these is the studio that has run casting days before. The one that says 'we can accommodate that, no problem' without engaging with the specifics probably hasn't.

The thing most casting briefs underestimate

Time. Casting photography goes at pace — two to three minutes per subject for stills and a basic video capture, which sounds fast but adds up across forty people. The studio booking needs enough time for setup before the first talent arrives, a brief reset at lunchtime, and enough buffer at the end that the casting director can review selects before the day is completely over.

A half-day for a twenty-person casting. A full day for forty and above. Build in thirty minutes of setup at the start that isn't eating into the casting window. And brief the studio that you'll be taping the floor and that the seamless needs to stay clean — casting stills on a marked or dirty grey background go straight to reshoot.
