The first test shoot I ever organised cost me £180 for four hours in a Shoreditch studio, at a rate clearly designed for commercial clients rather than a photographer trying out a new model and a light setup they'd been thinking about for three months. I came out with six usable images and an emptier wallet than the day deserved.

It took me a while to figure out that test shoots and commercial shoots are different briefs, and the right studio for one is often wrong for the other. Here's how I approach studio hire for test work now.

What a test shoot actually needs

A test shoot is collaborative and exploratory — photographer, model, sometimes a stylist and an MUA, working together to create images for portfolios and mood boards rather than to deliver against a client brief. The pace is different. The pressure is different. The outcome has to look excellent but the process doesn't have to be production-efficient.

So the room requirements are lighter than a full commercial booking. You don't need 2,000 square feet. You don't need three-phase power or a prop room or a kitchen. You need a clean, well-lit space where you can spend the day working without interruption, with enough power for your kit and a backdrop that looks good.

For most test work, 400 to 700 square feet is plenty. A cyc or a good seamless, solid power for your lighting rig, a changing area, and natural light if you're working with a daylight-blended setup. That's it.

Where the rates actually are

London studio hire for photography ranges from under £25 per hour at the budget end — particularly in Hackney, Stratford and the Tottenham belt — to £72 per hour and above at premium commercial venues in Shoreditch, Holborn and Battersea.

For test work, you don't need the top end. The sweet spot for a well-spec'd test shoot space in London is £30 to £50 per hour, which gives you a proper white or neutral cyc, decent strobe or continuous lighting included, a changing area for the talent, and a space that won't embarrass anyone in a behind-the-scenes clip.

At that rate band you're looking at East London studios — E8, E9, E17, N17 — plus some spaces in South London (Peckham, Deptford, Bermondsey) and the outer West (Acton, Park Royal). These areas have a density of small-to-mid studio operations where the owner is often a photographer themselves and the space is set up for exactly this kind of work.

The off-peak approach

Studios that cater to commercial clients often have gaps in the booking calendar they'd rather fill at a reduced rate than leave empty. Early morning slots (7 to 10am), late afternoon into evening (5 to 9pm), and midweek spots where demand drops off are all places where a studio might cut a deal.

The way to access this is to ask directly, not to expect it to be listed on the website. Email or call the studio, explain you're booking a test shoot rather than a commercial production, ask whether they have off-peak or test-shoot rates available. Some do. Some don't. But the ones that do often have genuinely good spaces at a third less than their listed rate for this kind of use case.

Studios that host tests regularly — some specifically market themselves as model-test or TFP-friendly studios — understand that the test shoots of today are often the commercial bookings of next year. They price accordingly.

The three-hour minimum problem

Most London studios have a minimum booking of two to three hours. Which sounds like plenty for a test shoot, but if you're doing a proper multi-look day with changing, styling and lighting resets between setups, three hours goes fast.

For most test shoot structures — one or two looks, a lighting setup you want to explore, a model you haven't worked with before — a minimum of four to five hours is where you're not watching the clock. Budget accordingly. The cost of cutting the day short and not getting the shots you came for is more expensive than the extra hour of studio hire.

What I look for in a test shoot space specifically

Clean, fresh seamless. Nothing marks a test shoot image faster than a battered paper roll with tyre marks and scuffed edges. Ask when the seamless was last replaced or trimmed. A studio that's had three commercial shoots on the same roll this week may not be at its best.

A comfortable space for the team. Test shoots have more people standing around between setups than commercial ones do. The model is changing, the stylist is working, you're reviewing the previous setup — there needs to be somewhere for people to sit that's not the studio floor. Good test shoot studios have a lounge or waiting area separate from the shooting space.

Natural light access, if that's what you're testing. Some test shoots are specifically about exploring daylight or window-mixed lighting setups. If that's the brief, the studio orientation matters — north-facing rooms for consistent flat light, east or south-facing for directional morning or afternoon light depending on the look. Check the orientation and window size before you book.

And parking, or at least loading access, if you're bringing more than a camera bag. A tripod, a reflector, a modifier case and your shooting kit is a reasonable test shoot load, and getting it up two flights of stairs in a converted warehouse with no lift is a mood killer at 8am.

The TFP question

Some studios offer TFP arrangements — time for prints in the digital era — where you get studio time in exchange for images the studio can use in their own marketing. Less structured than it used to be but still exists at smaller owner-operated spaces that genuinely want quality imagery for their website.

It's worth asking, particularly if the studio has older listing photography or a sparse visual presence online. The pitch: I'd like to run a test shoot in your space and I'd be happy to provide five to ten high-quality images of the studio in return for a reduced rate. Some will say no. Some will say yes. And some will say yes and turn it into a regular arrangement, which is genuinely useful if you're running a test shoot programme.

Platforms vs direct

Peerspace and Giggster both list London photo studios, but for test shoots specifically the platform fees add cost without adding much value. The studios worth knowing for test work tend to be direct-booking operations — smaller, owner-run, often not heavily platform-listed because they fill their calendar through word of mouth and a basic website.

Instagram is genuinely useful here. Photographers who've done test shoots in a specific studio will often tag the location. Find the studio's Instagram, look at who's shot there, message the account about availability and test shoot rates. That's how I've found two of my most-used test shoot spaces — and the experience is consistently better than booking a random platform listing at full commercial rate.

The rate I actually pay

For a test shoot day in East London — four to six hours, small cyc or clean seamless, included strobe or LED kit, decent changing area — I'm typically paying £130 to £200 total. That's the rate that makes a test shoot economically sensible for speculative creative work, rather than a significant production cost. North of £250 for a test day and I'm asking hard questions about whether the brief actually needs that level of space, or whether I'm paying for a commercial room for a non-commercial shoot.

The right space for a test shoot is often not the most impressive space. It's the one that gets out of the way and lets the work happen.
