The ceiling height question comes up every time someone starts planning a car photography studio day: how high does it need to be? The working answer for most production cars — saloons, SUVs, hatchbacks — is 4.5m minimum clearance to rig lights overhead without them appearing in the reflection off the bonnet. For anything with a higher roofline, like a large van or a pick-up with a sports bar, 5m is more comfortable.

London has studios that hit this. But London also has studio hire rates that make a car shoot expensive fast — and if the vehicle itself is coming from a manufacturer's fleet facility in the Midlands, or the film's production base is in Bristol, the logistics of hauling everything to East London and back start to look questionable.

So let me run through what's available outside London for car photography, and what the practical considerations are.

Birmingham

Birmingham is a logical base for automotive photography. Multiple manufacturers have regional operations nearby, several major car dealers have marketing budgets for studio-shot content, and the city has decent industrial unit availability that gets adapted for production use.

Purpose-built photography studios with drive-in access in Birmingham proper are rarer than in London — you're more likely to be looking at production company spaces or adapted industrial units. This isn't necessarily a problem: some of these spaces have genuinely excellent floor sizes and ceiling heights that purpose-built photo studios can't match on budget. The trade-off is infrastructure. Purpose-built studios come with rigging bars, clean backdrops, dedicated power feeds. Industrial units need kit brought in.

The NEC and its surrounding area is worth flagging for automotive work: there's significant event infrastructure in that cluster, and some venues have crossover capability for commercial photography, particularly for auto industry clients who are already familiar with the site. Not a conventional hire, but worth investigating for large-format car campaigns.

Manchester

Manchester's studio market has grown significantly. Ancoats and the surrounding inner city have seen several proper photography studios open in converted industrial buildings — some with genuinely large floor plates.

For car photography specifically, the question is always drive-in access. A large floor area is useless if the loading bay is designed for pallets rather than vehicles. Ask explicitly: what's the door opening height? What's the width? Is there a ground-level entrance or does it involve a ramp? For a standard SUV, you need around 2.2m door height minimum and 2.5m width. Sports cars are generally fine, but anything with a roof rack, bull bar, or roof tent needs measuring.

Manchester studios tend to price at a meaningful discount to comparable London spaces. This is one area where the £/sqft comparison between the two cities actually shows up clearly in practice — not just in theory. If the production is based in the North and the vehicle's coming from a client in Sheffield or Leeds, Manchester often just makes more sense geographically and financially.

Bristol

Bristol's creative sector is well-established, and there are legitimate photography and film studio options in and around the city. The Bottle Yard Studios, primarily a film production facility, has large stage spaces — though these are typically booked for long-form film and television rather than single-day photography hire. Worth checking for very large automotive campaigns with multi-day requirements.

For standard car photography, look to the studios clustered around the creative hubs in Stokes Croft and Spike Island. Some have large enough floor plates for vehicle work. The key check — as always — is ceiling height and drive-in access. Bristol's older industrial architecture can be deceptive: a beautiful space with great natural light and 6m ceilings, but accessible only via a narrow loading lane that won't take a Range Rover.

Power requirements

Car photography is power-hungry. A standard car shoot setup typically includes: overhead rigging bars with large LED panels or HMI sources (Arri SkyPanel S60-C units are common in car work, running at around 480W each), kicker lights on either side of the vehicle, a background light or LED strip along the base of a cyclorama, and potentially continuous lighting for any video sections of the brief.

Running three Arri SkyPanel S60-C units plus supporting kit is drawing close to 3kW from mains — before you factor in additional strobe packs, tethering kit, or the monitor station. This is three-phase territory in most production scenarios, or at minimum a dedicated 100A three-phase supply from the consumer unit.

A lot of adapted industrial spaces in Birmingham and Manchester have three-phase available because the buildings were previously industrial. This is actually a point in their favour over some purpose-built photography studios that have been fitted out for portrait and fashion work and never upgraded the power infrastructure.

Ask for a load calculation sheet. Any space that's handled automotive or large commercial production work will have done this. If they look confused by the question, keep looking.

Floor surface matters

Polished concrete is the standard and works well for car photography — it gives the slight reflection underfoot that reads well in vehicle exterior shots and is easy to clean between vehicles. Painted floors can be problematic: paint marks, tyre marks, and scuffs show up quickly and replacement or touch-up costs can be significant.

Ask the studio how they handle vehicle tyre marks and whether there's a surcharge for floor cleanup after a car shoot. This varies widely — some studios include it in the day rate, others charge a separate cleaning fee that can run to a few hundred pounds depending on the floor condition.

The logistics calculation

Here's the calculation that often tips the decision: if the vehicle is coming from a manufacturer facility or client site more than 90 minutes from London, and the crew is travelling from the Midlands or North anyway, the cost of a London studio plus vehicle transport and crew travel often exceeds a regional studio day by a material amount. Run the numbers properly, not just the studio rate in isolation.

Fleet shoots — multiple vehicles photographed across two or three days — make regional studios even more compelling. A two-day car photography brief in Manchester, with the vehicles sourced from a regional dealer network, can save several thousand pounds in transport and accommodation compared to running the same brief through a Park Royal studio.

What to look for in a car photography studio listing

When you're evaluating studios for automotive work, the specs that matter:

Ceiling height at the centre of the shooting floor (not at the walls)
Usable floor area including turning radius for the vehicle
Drive-in door dimensions (height × width)
Power supply: three-phase availability and amperage
Floor surface type and condition
Rigging infrastructure: are there overhead bars rated for production loads?
Load-in access for kit — separate from the vehicle entrance ideally
