Every studio listing that wants to charge a premium mentions north-facing windows. And every photographer who's booked three or four 'north-facing daylight studios' on the strength of that phrase knows that the words don't always match the light.

Here's what I've learned from roughly two years of specifically hunting north-facing daylight in London, and what you need to verify before the booking goes through.

What north-facing actually means for photography

North-facing windows in the UK don't receive direct sun at any point in the day. The sun rises in the east-southeast, arcs across the south, and sets in the west-southwest — year-round, it never crosses the northern sky. So a north-facing window delivers consistent indirect daylight: soft, diffused, directional without being harsh.

For portrait work, beauty campaigns, and still life, that quality of light is the goal. It's what a photographer would spend three hours modifying artificial light to replicate. You get it for free from the right window in the right studio.

South-facing windows are the problem. Direct sun through south-facing glass creates a moving hard light source that changes direction, intensity, and colour temperature across the shooting day. You can diffuse it with scrims — a 6×6ft artificial silk, for example — but you're fighting the sun rather than working with daylight. East and west-facing windows are usable in the morning and afternoon respectively, but you get direct sun at the right angles and need to manage it.

Why London's warehouse buildings are good for this

A lot of London's best daylight studios are in Victorian and Edwardian industrial buildings — the kind concentrated in Hackney, Dalston, Shoreditch, and Deptford. These buildings were designed before electric light was standard, and their north-facing skylights and clerestory windows were positioned deliberately for consistent working light. Textile workers, garment makers, and light engineers needed even illumination and couldn't have direct sun swinging across their work.

The building stock in Hackney Wick is particularly good for this. Older warehouse conversions there often have north-facing roof lights that drop a column of consistent daylight 8–12 hours a day in summer. The light quality you get in a well-positioned Hackney Wick studio in June between 9am and 4pm is genuinely difficult to beat with artificial light, even with a full Arri SkyPanel S60-C rig.

Dalston has a similar building density. The creative-use warehouse conversions along the Kingsland Road corridor include some good north-facing loft spaces, though they vary more in ceiling height and floor area than the Hackney Wick cluster.

How to actually verify north-facing orientation

Step one: get the exact address, not just the neighbourhood. Then open Google Maps satellite view and draw a mental north arrow. The windows should face that arrow. Simple.

Step two: check the floor plan. Many studios include floor plans in their listing. If the plan shows windows on one wall, verify which cardinal direction that wall faces using the satellite address.

Step three: ask the specific question. 'Are the main shooting windows north-facing?' is a yes/no question. If the studio can't answer directly, that's information. A studio owner who works with photographers every day knows their window orientation.

Step four: look at the listing photos critically. North-facing daylight is flat and soft — shadows are gentle, there's no hard catchlight from direct sun. If the listing photos show dramatic window-light beams or sharp shadow edges, those were shot at a sun angle, which means south, east, or west facing.

Window size matters as much as orientation

A north-facing window that's 1.5m wide and 1m tall doesn't deliver much — you'd need to work your subject very close to the glass to get usable exposure without boosting ISO. A north-facing clerestory running 8m across the full shooting width is a different category of resource.

When you're enquiring, ask for the total glazed area on the north face. Good studios can tell you. And ask about the shooting depth — how far from the window can you work and still get enough light for a clean exposure? At ISO 400 and f/5.6 on a bright overcast June day, a well-lit north-facing space should give you a usable shutter speed out to 3–4 metres. Beyond that you're supplementing with fill.

Time of year makes a significant difference

This is genuinely overlooked by photographers who book daylight studios in October for a job they've been told will be 'the same brief as the June shoot.' It's not the same brief. Not for daylight work.

London in June: sunrise around 4:45am, sunset around 9:15pm. North-facing studios are lit from roughly 6am to 8pm, with the best intensity between 10am and 4pm. You could realistically shoot twelve hours of good daylight if the building was open.

London in December: sunrise around 8am, sunset around 3:45pm. Your usable north-facing daylight window is 8am to about 3pm — five hours, max six. On an overcast December day, that light can be beautiful, but you'll supplement with artificial earlier and earlier as the session goes on.

If the brief requires consistent daylight and it's a winter date, either build extra time into the schedule or plan to supplement with a matched daylight source — an Aputure 600d at 5600K dialled down to daylight balance works well alongside north-facing window light without creating obvious fill artefacts.

Studios that market themselves on daylight

A few things to look for in the listing language. 'North-facing windows' is the specific claim — it's verifiable and specific. 'Natural light' is weaker; it just means windows exist. 'Flooded with light' means nothing. 'Daylight studio' without specifying orientation could be anything.

The best studios I've worked in are specific about their orientation because it's genuinely their selling point and they know it. They'll tell you the window dimensions, the approximate exposure on a bright day, and what the light looks like at different times of year. If you ask and they can't tell you, the light probably isn't their primary asset.

South London's growing daylight studio offer

Worth noting: Peckham, New Cross, and Deptford have added good daylight studios in the past few years. The building stock is similar to Hackney — older industrial and warehouse conversions — and the pricing is generally 10–20% below equivalent Hackney or Shoreditch spaces. Not as dense a studio cluster, but worth checking for specific dates if Hackney is fully booked.
