Portsmouth doesn't come up in the photography studio conversation very often. Most south-coast shoot planning starts in Brighton and ends in Southampton, and Portsmouth sits between the two getting skipped. Which is a shame, because the hire rates in PO postcodes are below what you'd pay in either of those cities, and the options — while not extensive — are solid enough for portrait, product and content work.

I've shot in the Portsmouth area twice in the past year. Here's what I found.

Cinnabar Studios — the main one to know

Cinnabar is the studio I'd book first for commercial work in Portsmouth. It's at Cosham, one minute's walk from Cosham Railway Station — genuinely easy loading access without a fuss about parking, which is not something every UK studio can claim.

The space runs to over 400 square feet, with a cyclorama that's 3.65 metres wide and 3 metres tall. That's a working cyc for portrait, fashion and product work — not car-photography spec, but fine for the vast majority of commercial briefs. The infinity curve is in good condition.

Rates: £40 per hour for the first two hours, dropping to £30 per hour after that. A half-day of four hours comes to £140. A full eight-hour commercial day would be £220 at that rate structure — which is genuinely competitive for a properly-equipped studio on the south coast. London equivalents with this spec would be £350 to £500 for the same hours.

The equipment included is proper kit. Pixapro AD400 Pro and AD200 Pro strobes, a Godox FV200 for video lighting, Pixapro DAYLiTE60D MK2 continuous panels, softboxes from 65 to 115cm, a beauty dish, C-stands, snoots, grids and gels. That's a full commercial lighting inventory — you could turn up with a camera and walk into most portrait or product briefs without hiring additional kit.

There's a makeup room and a dressing area. A kitchen, bathroom, and comfortable seating for talent. Free parking on site. For bookings over £300, Clearpay is available, which is useful if you're quoting the studio hire to a client on payment terms.

Nu Barn Studio — the rural option

Nu Barn is out in the Bosham countryside, which is further west along the A27 towards Chichester rather than in Portsmouth proper. A rural setting, aperture lights, LED strips, panel lights and softboxes in a converted barn space.

This one's worth considering for lifestyle and brand briefs where you want a rural or textured background rather than a clean white environment. The journey from Portsmouth centre is thirty-plus minutes, so it's not a quick booking if you're working from the city — but for clients coming from across the south coast, the Chichester location isn't worse than anything else in the area.

Liberty Photography — the DIY content option

Liberty Photography in Portsmouth offers a DIY content creation studio with natural light as its primary selling point. It's aimed at photographers learning the space and content creators who need a simple bookable room without a full commercial lighting rig. If you're running a client shoot that specifically needs natural light or wants to work without flash, it's worth a look. If you need a proper strobe setup, Cinnabar is the right call.

How Portsmouth rates compare

The honest picture on Hampshire coast studios: you're not going to find Manchester's volume of spaces or London's depth of specialist facilities. What you will find is competitive pricing for the spec. Cinnabar's day rate equivalent at Cosham — around £220 for eight hours, all kit included — is roughly what you'd pay for a three-hour booking in Shoreditch.

For clients based in Portsmouth, Fareham, Gosport, or the Isle of Wight ferry catchment area, this makes real sense. There's no reason to drag the whole production to Brighton or Southampton if the Portsmouth studios cover the brief.

One note on the Isle of Wight connection: the Wightlink and Hovertravel services make Portsmouth a viable base for IOW-based clients who need studio access. If you're on the island and doing occasional mainland shoots, Cosham is probably the most logical landing point — ten minutes from the Portsmouth Harbour ferry terminal by car.

What Portsmouth doesn't have

Automotive. There's no drive-in studio for car work in the Portsmouth area I've found — the nearest options are in Southampton or further east towards Brighton. If you need a cyclorama with a 4m-plus ceiling and a loading door, you're travelling.

Large-scale commercial production. For a multi-crew shoot with twenty people, multiple sets and full catering, the city doesn't have the studio infrastructure for that. The spaces here are good for teams of four to six; beyond that you're in different territory.

Specialist set builds. If you need a kitchen set, a living room or purpose-built lifestyle spaces, Southampton and Brighton cover that kind of brief for the south coast. Portsmouth's dedicated studios are clean white environments with good lighting, not prop rooms.

What to check before you book

Cinnabar works for most portrait, fashion and product briefs. But I'd still run the standard check:

Confirm the cyclorama is clean for the specific shoot date
Ask about the ambient light situation — studio orientation matters if you're mixing daylight and flash
If you're doing video alongside stills, check the ambient sound level — it's near a station, so there's some context to understand
Send your lighting plan if you have specific modifiers — confirm there are enough stands and clamps to avoid having to rig your own hardware

Both Cinnabar and Nu Barn are owner-operated, which means you get a direct and sensible answer when you call. That's worth more than it sounds when you've spent time chasing venue managers at larger commercial spaces who take three days to confirm whether a socket works.

Getting there

Cosham is on the London to Portsmouth mainline — trains from London Waterloo run directly, journey time around ninety minutes. For a day's portrait or product work at south coast rates without driving, that's a genuinely workable option. Turn up at the station with a camera bag, pick up the studio kit on arrival, and the day is sorted.

Portsmouth isn't on everyone's shortlist. It probably should be for the right brief.
